This piece was insightful and I learned a lot. First time hearing that Frankie Teardrop by Suicide. I’m curious to know where does someone like Marshall Mathers and Eminem fitting all of this as well.
Great question! Have a specific song for me to start with? I’d be curious what musical techniques are used to convey the message in hip hop compared to post-punk specifically
I have two verse that sorta deal with within Hip-Hop and my attempt to grapple with this. They are unreleased though. But I think I am most familiar with J. Cole’s work and his sorta ‘wanting the badest girl in the city’ see J Cole’s Adolescence. For Eminem, first song that comes to mind is ‘Stan’ his biggest fan (which is some real reflective stuff to say as to who his biggest fans are…).
This was a fascinating read. As a parent this is something that is constantly on my mind. I agree that the Frankie Teardrop song was hard to listen to. I got a about half way through and had to turn it off.
Dude... So on point. So poignant. Well timed piece. I love how you clearly displayed the connective tissue between the past and present with historical fact. Good work!
**side note** those songs were so damn dark, I couldn't even finish listening to them
I’m a woman and I love Radiohead
My kind of woman!!

I can only imagine how difficult it was to listen to as a parent!
The notes from my first listen were full of shock and terror.
Thanks for reading and trying to listen!

I don’t blame you at all for not finishing the songs. Especially Frankie Teardrop. Definitely one of the darkest songs I’ve ever heard
